I took this picture early this morning just before dawn broke. I believe this plant is called a “smoke bush.”

The morning air was a nippy 57 degrees with bright blue skies and finally, finally some hope the temperatures were cooling. And they did but only slightly. Tomorrow should be a repeat of today.

Meanwhile the red quill is spent. It’s five and a half inch stalk now lies on the ground, it’s tip propped up by other plants also dying.
Your view is wonderful! I bet you spend a good amount of time admiring nature from that vantage point.
Thank you. I try to but with all the fires this year it’s been hard.
Love the fall colors and this is a great view
It especially nice when the fog rolls over the hills. Hasn’t happened nearly enough this year though.
😊🐸
I love your view. So much green.
Thanks – unfortunately very dry trees right now. High fire danger.
Still?
We had a house with a smoke bush in the yard. It was pretty, but all the leaves that dropped off the trees would get caught in it. I didn’t mind, but my husband took the messiness personally.
With us it’s the pine needles. Every week bushels of dead pine needles. I love the shade but ugh.
I like your deck. And the views from it!
Thanks!
Always a little sad when your plants go flaccid…. still tumescent spring is just a few months away.
I have no idea it that particular plant will come back again next year. Kind of a mystery. I would just like for summer to end here.
calling all falls, please would you make your way to California immediately…
Your view is wonderful, I see the Red Quill is looking sad, I don’t think the Tryphids ever laid down like that 💜💜💜😬
Thanks Willow – I guess that proves it’s not really a Tryphid!
Lovely photos! I especially enjoy looking from your viewpoint on your porch with those cool Adirondack-style chairs! Looks VERY relaxing!
Thank you! Generally it’s fairly quiet here even though we are just minutes from Oakland and San Francisco.
WOW! Thanks, Jan.

How appropriate is a smoke bush for this past summer and fall filled with smoke. Nice that the cooler temperatures are FINALLY arriving. Up in the north bay many of us, my household included, have been without power for two days. Let’s hope this new season gives our dry foliage some soakings…. Take care, Jan.
We are clearly all envious of that fantastic view!😊 But I understand the fires & drought impinge on the beauty, especially since they’re unpredictable and open-ended. I’m glad the smoke has cleared for you.
