We had to put in a new retaining wall and fix a drainage problem which required a lot of dirt moving and unearthed tons of rocks. Literally. The entire project was supposed to take a week. It took over a month. I just wrote the final check.
I began noticing many smooth rocks were being unearthed. The kind of rocks that are gentle to bare feet. The Mexican guys who did most of the work must have thought I was nuts, stacking piles of silty stones along the new retaining wall, but I grew up in Nevada where rock collecting used to be a very popular hobby. Admittedly most people were looking for arrowheads.
Amazing what you can find in nature. An art gallery once the silt of ages is washed away.

The old retaining wall was probably 70 years old and so the unearthed rocks have had quite a while to tumble! !
The stones are beautiful. Nothing crazy about keeping those.
To guys who have to shovel gravel for a living I’m sure rock collecting would not be their preferred hobby!
Love these! Rock-collecting is such fun. A friend I know has a beautiful collection on display in her living room, and I never fail to spend some time admiring them when I drop by.
I don’t think I was ever that into the hobby … it was one of many. The most beautiful and fascinating collection of rocks I’ve ever seen was in the mining museum in Carson City Nevada but that’s not exactly a tourist destination!

There are some rocks that have no unusual coloration but they are smooth and even perfectly rounded. I’m just as amazed by them!
