Love the photos (and the one of the cat at the top) but I would never encourage a raccoon to hang around. They can get into anything and make a terrible mess if they do, especially in your attic or garbage can.
I thought it was a hedgehog at first, but then realised that they only have short legs. Then a racoon came to mind. Good to hear you leave some water out for them. I thought they may have been nocturnal, but it seems not.
He/she is certainly very cute. Not sure about keeping one as a pet though!
Re: the daylight. About 20 years ago, a house across the street from us had been abandoned and was in terrible condition. (It’s now been torn down and rebuilt.) One sunny spring day, we looked out at the house and saw an entire family of raccoons on the porch, just chilling out. Some neighbors and I were alarmed, but we soon learned that they often stay out in daylight during mating season and/or when they have babies to feed. I hope you guys stay safe!
This guy has been to visit us lately too. I read that they come out late in the day if hungry or in need of water (but we do have a creek!) Two blue jays were harassing him/her for about 1/2 an hour. I didn’t know they would just hang out. Guess we won’t see him anymore if Joel is feeding them!
HI Cinda – I got a good look at her yesterday – looks like a lactating mother! Joel is not permitted to feed the raccoon but we do leave out water for her. The jays are just noisy busy bodies!
I’m sure it’s possible, Joy Adamson made a pet of Elsa the lioness. (Rather exceptional though).
So I can imagine taking a baby raccoon at a very early age, would be easy to make them tame… (Another extraordinary woman, Daphne Sheldrick made pets of orphaned rhinos or elephants! 😳)
Be good.
The expressions on its face are priceless! Great captures!
Very cute, but I don’t think I’d want him lurking in my yard making a mess of everything. I have enough issue with the squirrels! His coloring is like that of a Keeshond, which is also known as a Wolfspitz. Maybe they should be called Racoonspitz?
I saw the comment about hedgehog, I think they’re so cute! I didn’t know we had them in the US though.
How cute. Your Joel sounds exactly like me. I think everything will make a great pet.
For some reason he’s not a fan of crows – but every other bird and little critter he’d adopt if he could.
I’ve never had a crow in the garden. I do have pet weavers, hadedas, and loeries.
No crows? Wow -we have zillions!
Oh I love this he’s so cute 💜😎😎
It’s the first time I’ve seen a raccoon out during the day! I used to see them at twilight but this was midafternoon!
Hr is special 💜
They do make great pets! My husband had one as a child.
And they love to rinse their food so he was probably looking for water…
❤️
I wonder how his parents felt about that!
His mother loved Teddy. Used to take him grocery shopping with her. He would sit in the child seat of the cart…
💕
This is wonderful, Jan. Hugs.
Now you’ve done it.
“Duane, come on. There’s a lady give out free food. Of course, bring your whole family…”
Yeah, I know. Duane and all gang will probably show up soon!

The top photo is actually of the raccoon! I put a few buckets of water down below so that if they get thirsty they don’t need to come up on the deck.
The top one I saw was of a cat. But the raccoon with its head in the watering can is cute.
I knew someone who once had a pet raccoon but I’m skeptical!
Raccoons are sooo cute. I wish they did make neat pets, not pests!
Fun photos, Jan!

Gosh – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hedgehog in the backyard! That would be something.
Oh what a character!
He/she is certainly very cute. Not sure about keeping one as a pet though!

Yikes – that would be alarming!

It did look like a raccoon in the bucket. But not a pet. They’re destroyers…😉
I agree! Although I do know people who have made pets out of them.

Raccoons are cute – no doubt. But they do have scary looking claws.

From what I’ve heard, hedgehogs are very shy – they tend to stay in woodland areas.
That raccoon looks suspiciously
familiar, Jan 🦝 👀
Didn’t I see him at a soccer match ⚽
in Pennsylvania Wednesday night?
That wiley raccoon sure gets around.
I saw that story! People were actually rooting for the raccoon to make a goal. This raccoon I’m fairly sure is a lactating mother.
Are they noisy or just quietly put their heads in a watering can and say goodbye after the peanuts?
This raccoon probably weighs twenty-five pounds so you can hear her on the deck but she doesn’t make any sounds.
Cute 🙂🙂
He’s so adorable! That cheeky little glance he gave the camera from behind the watering can just melted my heart.
Generally you don’t see raccoons during the day so it was quite a surprise!
It’s possums in our parts down under – I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the critters; they look so cute but make a mess! Linda xox
We don’t see a lot of possums – maybe they don’t get along with raccoons! Who knows what happens while we sleep!
sometimes better not to know! 😉
